Meet Hang Lee, dually-certified Automotive Detailer & Paint Correction Specialist

Car ownership was an eye-opening experience for Hang Lee, who never thought much about cars and trucks until he owned one. His newfound passion quickly took root and he began spending his spare time making modification that enhanced his car's looks while making sure it always had an out-of-this-world shine. How clean he kept his car was a manifestation of his personality and Hang is a perfectionist.

In spite of his passion, Hang, like many future detailers, never thought about turning his hobby into a career. At age 15, he went to work in the warehousing industry for nine years. He even went to school to study plumbing and steamfitting, working as a plumber for a few months before getting a well-paying position in the pipeline industry where he stayed for 3 years. However, he was simply not happy working for someone else and always had that nagging desire to own his own business.

A devoted family man, it was after he and his wife of nine years had their first child that Hang knew he wanted to spend more time with, and be more involved with the. His job was keeping him away from home too much, so two years ago, Hang opened Galaxy Car Wash.

He threw himself into the business with all his pent-up passion, but now that he was free to make his own business decisions, Hang knew there was more to detailing than just washing and waxing a car. Now offering a professional service with little formal training, Hang wanted to take his business to a higher level. There was so much innovation in the car care industry and he wanted to be a part of it - ceramic coatings; steam cleaning techniques for getting out interior stains and odors; and safe techniques for cleaning and buffing paint that would get a car even shinier than he was accustomed to.

Certified by the IDA & Detailer of Air Force One

Hang wanted to find out more about these techniques so he could offer customers a much higher level of service, more of those services, and he wanted to become the best detailer possible.

Hang read about Renny Doyle of Detailing Success in Big Bear, California and how he was known as "The Detailer of Air Force One" after spending the past decade restoring the original U.S. presidential jet Air Force One on display at Seattle's Museum of Flight. Doyle also has his own line of automotive car care products known as Double Black, so Hang decided he was the kind of trainer he needed.

"I absolutely loved it," says Hang. "It was the best training I've been to and not just because he taught me everything I needed to know about detailing, but they treated me like family. Even when it comes to follow-up, I know Renny and the entire Detailing Success Network of detailers and their senior-level Detail Mafia members are there to answer questions, offer advice, and act as mentors if I ever need help."

Hang was amazed at all he learned. Training showed him how to offer customers more advanced services, something he couldn't do before. They introduced him to protective coatings and in addition to gaining a detailers certification, he was also certified in paint correction, Double Black Inspiration coating application, as well as in headlight repair. He even received a certification and Skills Validated (CD, SV) designation from the International Detailing Association (IDA).

Hang especially enjoys applying coatings.

Correct & Then Protect

"Correct and then protect, right?" says Hang. "Once I correct your paint so that all of the fading, oxidation, and fine scratches are gone, applying a semi-permanent coating protects that shine for a couple of years or more, and that is something customers are looking for. When I see the results and the customer realizes the benefits like not having to wash their vehicle as often, not having to wax or polish their paint anymore, and that even interiors can be maintained for years, they are so happy, which makes me happy."

In fact, Hang may well go back for more training in the near future. He is also certified in the application of the Ceramic Pro coatings line and Inspiration, but he feels there are other excellent coatings products on the market. He also plans to go for Paint Protection Film (PPF) installation training in the near future.

Hang sees the automotive detailing business as a great opportunity to meet and talk to new people every day, and not just about cars. Technology drives all areas of life these days and it is so amazing and fluid it's hard for anyone to keep up. However, as long as automotive car care keeps improving, a detailer like Hang Lee has the ability to improve efficiencies for the customer, and to helps the car owner protect their automotive investment.

Hang finds that most customers comment that their vehicle looks like a brand new car again, which is of course the very definition of "Automotive detailing" - the art and science of maintaining or reviving a vehicle to a "like new" level of care that protects their investment, saves them money in the long run, and ensures they will get a higher price for that vehicle when they sell or trade.
